Example Computation for a Healthy Hive

Here is an example of the computatioin of net weight for a healthy hive.

  • Left side measurement= 23 pounds 3 ounces.
  • Right side measurement = 21 pounds 15 ounces.
  • Total of two measurements = 45 pounds 2 ounces
  • Convert to fractional pounds = 45.125 pounds
  • Tare weight of the BeeWeigh used = 4.06
  • Mechanical advantage factor of the BeeWeigh= 3.19
  • Computation: 45.125 plus(2 x 4.06) times 3.19 = 169.85 pounds gross weight
  • Tare weight of the hive is 73 pounds.
  • Gross weight less hive tare weight = 170 – 73 = 97 pounds net weight

The time required to determine the gross weight of each hive can be shortened greatly by preparing a spreadsheet that includes the above computations over the typical range of hive weights in increments of about two ounces. Printing this spreadsheet provides a quick look-up table for use in the bee yard.
